Math Standards
How you can help your child with math:
- Point out when you're using math in every day activities (cooking, grocery shopping, your daily schedule, etc.) and have them help figure out questions..."how much longer before we need to get ready for bed?" Round prices at the grocery store and estimate what you are spending.
- KNOW addition, subtraction, and once they're introduced multiplication facts. Multiplication is HUGE and students must have their facts mastered in order to be successful in 4th grade. Multiplication is a must needed prerequisite for just about all of their fraction unit, not to mention it really helps with time management when solving complex problems. It's one less thing to try and figure out!

Expectations of Math Work:
Students are expected to EXPLAIN their thinking through either words, or showing how problems are solved. Equations alone are not that same as showing work. Students decompose numbers, use number lines, skip count to solve problems that are not "mental math" problems.
We also ask that students make their answers CLEAR when a lot of work is being shown. If there are many equations and other writing for one problem, the answer should stand out and be easy to find. When word problems are being solved, we expect students to show the answer in a complete sentence - students have been asked of this since the 1st day of school. Many have even been asked of this in second grade. Easy to remember - if the problem/question has words, the answer must have words (as well as a LABEL...cents, dollars, stickers, etc.)
This is to ensure that students are clear on what they are looking for, and so that they are well prepared for the EOG. This will help TREMENDOUSLY when they enter higher grades, as it will become a habit in their problem solving.
